Literary Focus 6
6. Analyse: Sone says the camp "was hopefully called Camp Harmony." Do you think the name is appropriate, or is it ironic? Support your answer with evidence from the text.
I think that the name "Camp Harmony" is rather ironic. This internment camp was a "home" for all Japanese American people. In this camp, people were surrounded by a fence and the people had no right to walk where they wanted. Their home was also very bad because drops of water were coming out of the roof. The meal was very bad and the place had such a limited space sand was so crowded, that families had to sit individually away from each other. This environment was new to all Japanese Americans. Although people tried to act normally like nothing happened, a lot of things were going on in people's minds. They were all confused as to why they were here. They haven't done anything wrong, and they didn't have any alliance with Japan, so why were they here? People's minds were in chaos because they were confused, and therefore, I think that the title should be renamed into "Camp Chaos."
